Civil Engineering — civil and structural engineering

Overview

Civil engineering shapes the ground your project stands on — from greenfield mining platform development to brownfield upgrades, ROM pads, plant hardstands, roads, drainage and retaining structures. Nunese delivers site civil design integrated with structural engineering so platform levels, earthworks and services align with conveyor layouts, building footprints and constructability on operating mine, port and industrial sites across Australia.

What is civil engineering for mining and heavy industry?

Civil engineering covers everything below and around your structures that makes a site workable: landform, platforms, roads, drainage, retaining systems, culverts, bridges and bulk earthworks. On mining and industrial projects, civil design is not a standalone discipline — it must match equipment layouts, structural footprints, haul routes, flood paths and the way the site is built in stages while production continues.

Nunese specialises in civil engineering for mining engineering platform development and industrial site infrastructure. That includes new greenfield ROM pads and processing platforms, port and terminal pavements, refinery and plant hardstands, and brownfield changes where existing platforms are raised, extended or regraded to suit new equipment or structural modules.

We work to Australian Standards and client specifications, coordinating civil outputs with our structural team so platform levels, drainage falls and pavement thicknesses support the loads and details on the structural drawings — one integrated delivery thread from study through to site.

Mining platform development and site earthworks

Mining engineering platforms — ROM pads, stockpile pads, truck parking, laydown areas and plant hardstands — require more than a flat pad. Civil design defines finished levels, cross-fall for drainage, subgrade preparation, pavement or crushed-rock surfacing, edge restraint, and how cut-and-fill balances with nearby structures and services.

For greenfield developments, we support feasibility and detailed design with platform layouts tied to process and structural inputs, earthworks quantities for CAPEX, and constructability notes for staged build. For brownfield sites, we design modifications to existing platforms: level changes, extensions, new accesses, and tie-ins to current drainage — minimising disruption to operating haul routes and plant.

  • ROM and stockpile pad grading, drainage and surfacing design
  • Processing plant and module hardstand platforms
  • Laydown, workshop and warehouse forecourts
  • Cut-and-fill balancing and bulk earthworks volumes
  • Platform tie-ins to conveyors, bins and structural foundations
  • Temporary works and staged construction platforms

When you need civil engineering

Engage civil engineering early whenever site levels, earthworks or infrastructure drive cost, schedule or approval risk. Typical triggers include:

  • Greenfield mine, port or plant site development or expansion
  • New or upgraded ROM pad, processing platform or materials-handling area
  • Brownfield platform changes to suit new equipment, modules or structural additions
  • Haul road, access road or terminal pavement design and rehabilitation
  • Site drainage upgrades, flood management or culvert replacements
  • Retaining walls for cuts, bins, stockpiles or building platforms
  • Bridge, culvert or dam-related civil assessments
  • Study-stage layout and quantity input for PFS/FS investment decisions

What our civil engineering services include

Our civil scopes are scaled to project stage and delivery model — from study layouts through certified IFC packages and construction support:

  • Site surveys and design basis coordination (with surveyors and geotechnical input)
  • Master planning and platform layout supporting structural and process design
  • Grading plans, long sections and earthworks drawings
  • Stormwater drainage design — pits, pipes, culverts, detention where required
  • Pavement design for heavy-duty haul roads and industrial hardstands
  • Retaining wall design (gravity, cantilever, reinforced soil) to Australian Standards
  • Structural change support — civil works tied to new footings, pits, trenches and services
  • Specifications, details and construction methodology notes for site teams
  • RFI responses, site inspections and as-built support during construction

Drainage, roads and retaining structures

Poor drainage is one of the most common causes of pavement failure and platform downtime on mine and port sites. We design graded surfaces, table drains, culverts and pipe networks that match site rainfall, sediment control requirements and maintenance access — integrated with environmental and client water management standards.

Haul and access roads are designed for expected traffic, subgrade conditions and maintenance life, with thickness design appropriate to mine trucks, port equipment or general industrial traffic. Retaining structures support cuts alongside platforms, bins and buildings, with coordination to structural loads and geotechnical recommendations where slopes are critical.

Bridges, dams and integration with structural engineering

Beyond platforms and site civil, we deliver bridge and culvert design for industrial and transport clients — including D&C bridge packages to TfNSW specifications with SM1600 loading where applicable. We also undertake dam remediation assessments and civil components of infrastructure risk reviews.

Civil and structural engineering are deliberately integrated at Nunese: platform levels feed foundation datums; drainage crosses structural zones; brownfield structural changes often require platform regrading, new pits or retaining — we resolve those interfaces in one team rather than handing off between separate consultancies. That integration is especially valuable on mining and port projects where shutdown windows are short and design clarity on site is essential.

Lifecycle

Where this service fits

Civil engineering is engaged from concept and feasibility (layout, quantities, earthworks risk) through detailed design and construction — often in parallel with structural scopes for platforms, plant and infrastructure upgrades.
