Detailed structural design for a greenfield mineral sands refinery in remote NSW — processing plant steel, concrete and equipment supports to Australian Standards.
Project Context
The Balranald mineral sands project is a greenfield refinery development in far-western NSW, requiring structural engineering that could progress from study layouts through to detailed, constructable packages for a remote site with aggressive procurement and construction programmes.
Engineering Scope
- Structural layout and design basis for processing plant areas
- Structural steel design — pipe racks, platforms, access stairs and equipment support frames
- Concrete design — equipment foundations, plinths, pits and containment structures
- Load definition for mechanical, piping and electrical interfaces
- Coordination with process, civil and piping disciplines on clashes and constructability
- Study and detailed design deliverables supporting EPCM and owner review cycles
Standards And Approach
Design was undertaken to relevant Australian Standards and project-specific criteria, with emphasis on modular repetition, standard sections and site-erection efficiency. Remote delivery constraints informed detailing for transport, tolerances and inspection hold points.
Outcomes
- Integrated structural packages supporting greenfield refinery delivery
- Constructable steel and concrete documentation for contractor procurement
- Continuity from study-stage layouts into detailed design
