Detailed structural design for a greenfield mineral sands refinery in remote NSW — processing plant steel, concrete and equipment supports to Australian Standards.

Project Context

The Balranald mineral sands project is a greenfield refinery development in far-western NSW, requiring structural engineering that could progress from study layouts through to detailed, constructable packages for a remote site with aggressive procurement and construction programmes.

Engineering Scope

  • Structural layout and design basis for processing plant areas
  • Structural steel design — pipe racks, platforms, access stairs and equipment support frames
  • Concrete design — equipment foundations, plinths, pits and containment structures
  • Load definition for mechanical, piping and electrical interfaces
  • Coordination with process, civil and piping disciplines on clashes and constructability
  • Study and detailed design deliverables supporting EPCM and owner review cycles

Standards And Approach

Design was undertaken to relevant Australian Standards and project-specific criteria, with emphasis on modular repetition, standard sections and site-erection efficiency. Remote delivery constraints informed detailing for transport, tolerances and inspection hold points.

Outcomes

  • Integrated structural packages supporting greenfield refinery delivery
  • Constructable steel and concrete documentation for contractor procurement
  • Continuity from study-stage layouts into detailed design
